Nevine is a London-based Egyptian/British artist. Her work, which is primarily figurative with a visual focus on the relationship between figure and space, presents psychological narratives that provoke a re-examination of reality and perception while exploring the universality of human experience, body language, and non-verbal expression.
While she mostly works in oil, Nevine experiments with different mixing mediums, surfaces, and painting applications to achieve a variety of marks and to open her compositions to chance elements.
Nevine’s exhibited work features a combination of captured, unstaged stolen moments which tell stories of gender roles, religious and patriarchal influences, and how these all inform the cultural dynamic in a traditionally conservative society. This project was
inspired by street photography walks in the old quarters of her home city Cairo, its heat and dust mirrored in a grey palette with single warm colours. This project sprung out of everyday scenes taking place against a backdrop of old Cairo architecture, as subtle clues to the lives of people in that part of the world revealed themselves to the artist, stirring up the distinct, yet interweaving narratives of each piece.
